That’s why there’s promise in an alternative—soybean extract. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science compared soybeans to retinoic acid and found the two ingredients to be similar in their effects on the skin’s fibroblasts (which boost collagen), suggesting that it could have similar wrinkle-reducing benefits—without the dreaded irritation of our dear friend retinol. Plus, soybeans may protect against the sun and “can be safely used under sunlight,” according to the study. While retinol, as you may know, shouldn’t be worn in the sun. Though a cosmetics company funded this specific study, experts not involved in this research are excited by soy’s potential. “Soy has estrogen-like ingredients that can help revitalize mature skin,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, dermatologist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Prevention advisor. “Ingredients in soy have been shown to stimulate similar receptors as retinoids, in order to improve the appearance of skin and minimize wrinkles,” adding that it’s a great option “for people who can’t tolerate retinol.” More from Prevention:The Wrinkle Fix Of The Future Love Your Lines
