Checking your feet on a daily basis and correctly taking care of them can prevent major complications down the road. Make it a part of your daily routine to check your feet for signs of abrasions, blisters or other problems. Use a mirror if necessary. Do not pop or break blisters, as it will increase your risk of infection. Corns and calluses are best left to the professionals for treatment. To prevent ingrown toenails, clip nails straight across. You can smooth out any sharp corners with an emery board. Wear socks and be sure to keep your feet moisturized but dry between the toes. Remember to visit your podiatrist at least once a year for a foot exam, and talk to her about the self-care routine that’s right for you. Reviewed by Francine Kaufman, MD. 4/08
