Article from How to Apply Perfume Correctly by Miriam Lacey of BellaSugar Fragrance is highly personal, and generally, as long as it smells good to you, there’s no real “right” or “wrong.” However, if you want to get the full experience of your favorite perfume and have it wear as beautifully as possible, there actually is an optimal way to put it on. To find out how, see our tips below. First off, don’t put perfume on over any kind of scented lotion or oil. Perfume chemicals interact in all sorts of crazy ways, so something that smells great on your bare skin could be downright noisome paired with the wrong moisturizer. Another thing many people don’t realize is that rubbing your wrists together “crushes” perfume by breaking down the small fragrance molecules. So what you get is weird, uneven development over the course of a day, poor wear, and the wrong proportions of different notes. Instead, spray or dab wrists separately, or touch them together gently. And finally, don’t use more than a single spritz if you’re wearing eau de parfum that’s in an atomizer. Body mists and eau de toilettes are more dilute and therefore better for all-over spritzing, but your typical perfume is designed to be used sparingly.
