Fifty-two percent of Americans say figuring out their income taxes is easier than knowing what they’re supposed to eat to be healthier, finds a new survery from the International Food Information Council Foundation that interviewed 1,057 Americans ages 18 to 80. It’s not that people don’t want to eat better, says the survey, it’s just that 76% say ever-changing nutritional guidance makes it hard to know what to believe. Other findings: While 55% of Americans are trying to lose weight, 23% of obese consumers and 44% of overweight consumers say they are not trying. On the plus side, 66% of Americans have gave some thought to thesustainability of their foods this past year, with about 40% regularly purchasing locally sourced products.   POM (Not So) Wonderful Juice [Los Angeles Times] Don’t believe everything you hear, particularly when it comes to advertising. Case in point: A federal judge ruled this week that pomegranate juice maker Pom Wonderful used deceptive advertising when it implied its products could treat or prevent serious diseases and other medical conditions, upholding much of a 2010 Federal Trade Commission complaint against the company. The judge said that Pom used insufficient evidence to back its claims that Pom products “treat, prevent or reduce the risk of heart disease, prostate cancer or erectile dysfunction.”  So Long, Longevity Gap [The Huffington Post]  American men are closing the longevity gap between the sexes, according to a study by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation. What’s more, men are adding years to their lives at a faster pace: Men’s life expectancy jumped by an average of 4.6 years, from 66.1 to 81.6 years, between 1989 to 2009; women’s longevity only rose by 2.7 years, from 73.5 to 86.
