Can Sugar-Free Gum Actually Prevent Cavities? [The New York Times] Sure, popping a piece of sugar-free gum can seem like a smart post-meal option when a toothbrush isn’t available. But do the products really prevent cavities? Not exactly, says most research into the claim, including a major new study published in The Journal of the American Dental Association. Instead, the actual act of chewing the gum—which increases the flow of saliva, thereby rinsing away plaque and debris—seems to confer that benefit. Of course, these findings don’t mean you should sacrifice a chew here and there. But researchers caution that gum chompers should always opt for sugar-free varieties, because gum made with sucrose will do your teeth much more harm than good. The Weird Reason We Might Skip Flu Shots [Futurity] If you’re one of the thousands who’ve fallen ill, then you’re well aware that flu season is underway across the country. Now, new research highlights how we go about deciding whether or not to get the flu shot—and it seems to come down, at least in part, to the price of the jab. Writing in the Journal of Consumer Research, investigators conclude that people are less likely to get a flu shot when the injection costs more, because they assume that a higher price means they’re less vulnerable to the illness. In other words, a steep fee signals that an illness is less common, prompting us to skip out on preventive measures. (Stay healthy this season with 23 Ways To Prevent Colds & Flu.)  Got Bad Breath? Yup, There’s An App For That [Business Insider] Already, smartphones can give directions, offer time-sensitive reminders, and even help you decide where to have dinner. Soon, they might also let you know whether to end that dinner with a goodnight kiss…or a breath mint. A technology startup, Adamant, is developing a device that can pick up and distinguish between various odors. Within two years, company leaders anticipate the device being plugged into smartphones in order to work with various apps, including one meant to track bad breath.
